Airside vs landside
Each JFK terminal is operated by a different airline or consortium, so there is no single airport-wide overnight policy. Some concourses stay open and lit through the night for early-morning departures; others are swept and closed once the last flight leaves, and you are pushed out to the arrivals level. Once you exit security you cannot return until the checkpoint reopens in the early morning, and there is no airside walkway linking every terminal — the AirTrain between them runs landside. Assume you are committing to whichever terminal you are standing in.
Where to sleep
The honest ranking: a room at the on-airport hotel, then a lounge that opens early, then a bench. Fixed armrests are the rule across most seating, so the flat surfaces are the padded benches near the quieter ends of concourses and the carpeted areas by service desks. The arrivals level is warmer and busier than departures but also the least restful, with announcements and floor cleaning running all night. If you have a checked-bag connection and a morning departure, the arrivals hall of your terminal is usually where you will end up.
Lounges, scored for sleeping
JFK has more lounges than almost any airport in the Americas and almost none of them are useful at 3am. Nearly all close with the last departure bank and reopen a few hours before the morning one. Treat them as a way to end an overnight well — shower, food, a real chair — rather than as somewhere to spend it.

Terminal 4 keeps the widest late-night selection running, and a handful of grab-and-go counters elsewhere stay open for the red-eye crowd. In the deep hours you may be down to vending machines and whatever the newsstand still has. Buy something before the last kitchen closes rather than hoping.

Handles mostly evening long-haul departures and empties out hard afterwards; expect little to be open late.
The most reliable overnight terminal — busiest, best-lit and with the most late-night food.
JetBlue's terminal stays reasonably active and connects directly to the TWA Hotel, the best overnight refuge at JFK.
Quiet late and subject to ongoing redevelopment; do not plan a night around it.
American's terminal is large and stays lit, but seating is armrest-heavy and overnight services are minimal.
Night transport
The AirTrain connects all terminals and runs through the night, which makes it the practical way to change terminals or reach the on-airport hotel. Subway service from Jamaica and Howard Beach continues overnight but slows to long headways, so a 20-minute wait is normal. Ride-hailing and yellow cabs are always available at the terminal curbs and are the fastest way into Manhattan after midnight.
Safety & solo travelers
JFK is patrolled by Port Authority police and staffed all night, and the terminals themselves are not a high-risk environment. The realistic overnight risk is opportunistic bag theft while you sleep, particularly on the landside arrivals level where anyone can walk in. Loop a strap around your leg or a chair, keep your passport on your body, and choose a spot within sight of a staffed desk.
Family & accessibility
Family restrooms and nursing rooms exist in the newer terminals, and Terminal 4 has the most consistent facilities. With children, a room at the on-airport hotel is worth the money — the gate benches are unforgiving and the overnight cleaning noise is relentless.

Can you sleep in JFK Airport overnight?
